I found the news of Kate Spade's death-by-suicide heartbreaking and would never have suspected her to be so unhappy and trapped by her circumstances. Looking at this image of her apartment in Manhattan, I recall André Leon Talley's quote from my previous post about living in a "gilt, gold-plated hell".
After her death, I listened to her interview with Guy Roz from the show "How I Built This". She and her then-husband Andy Spade describe the scrappy beginnings of her purse line. Again, I didn't sense her unhappiness in the interview.
It can be difficult to perceive what's beyond a person's exterior.
