The street artist Banksy has managed to remain anonymous while achieving worldwide fame.
In June, I visited Bristol, England, the home of this "unknown" street artist (if he's unknown, how do we know where he's from? ha ha).
Perhaps in homage to Banksy, Bristol has a flourishing street-art scene. I took a self-guided tour, and here's a selection of what I saw!
"The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum". This painting, located on Spike Island, parodies Vermeer's "Girl With a Pearl Earring" and is one of Banksy's more recent instalments in Bristol. |
A beautiful mural painted by @thetuns. I couldn't find this person on Instagram. A great color scheme, in any event. |
Banksy's Well Hung Lover. This has been vandalized several times. The blue paint boxes really obscure the painting, but overall it's still visible. |
This building was entirely covered with art. Loved these comedy/tragedy masks along the left side of the building. The little blue & green guys peeking under the tree on the adjacent wall showed up all over town in various colors. |
Here's the little guy again. We couldn't figure out who this artist was, but he/she had certainly made his mark! |
Impressive paintings alongside a building in Bristol. |
This character looks like Japanese animation to me. |
The street art had so much variety. This painting hearkens back to a period of Britsh history several hundred years ago. |
This is the opposite side of the building with the Greek Theater masks. |
"You don't need planning permission to build castles in the sky". Banksy's giving us a little advice in this final photo. And perhaps giving a little jab at the "unplanned/unapproved" nature of street art. This simple painting is attributed to the famous artist himself.
And there you have it! As you can see, taking a walk through Bristol is a bit like walking through an outdoor museum.
Which painting is your favorite?
