Vocabulary in Great Gatsby

I've listened to just over a quarter of Jake Gyllenhaal's reading of Great Gatsby, an acquisition from Audible's Black Friday sale, and here's some of the vocabulary that I've come across:

supercilious
epigram
carriage (as in a person's bearing)
extemporaneous
contributory
retinas
proprietary
omnibus
obstetrics

A British woman I recently met told me Americans have weak vocabularies.  Whether that's true or not, Fitzgerald certainly would be an exception!
